Substituted-2H, 5H-pyrano (4,3-b) pyran-2, 5-diones (lIa) and (lIb) have been isolated as by products in the preparation of dehydrobenzoylacetic acid (1) from the selfcondesnation of ethylbenzoylacetate. A facHe method of general applicability for the synthesis of substituted-2H, 5Hpyranopyran-2, 5-diones (lIb-g, V) from "l3-ketoesters and 4-hydroxy-pyran -2-ones (III, IV) using sodium bicarbonate as condensing agent has been described. For spectral comparison a number of substituted-4H, 5H-pyranopyran-4, 5-diones (VI, VII) have also been synthesised.read more

The chemical constituents of the leaves and the roots of Salvadora oleoides have been isolated and characterized. Their protein and carbohydrate content is studied in detail. The protein pattern from the leaves resembles that of other green leaves plant, however the protein fraction I is higher. The amino acid compositions of the leaf proteins and root peptides have been reported. Mono-, anddisac-charides from both leaves and roots are also characterized. Their inorganic constituent is found to be very high, and has been analysed. read more

Sixteen new 'ManDich Bases' were synthesised by the reaction of 2-oxo-3-(2,4-dinitrophenylacetyl hydrazono)-S-substituted-fndoles with the appropriate secondary amines in the presence of formaldehyde solution. These indoles were prepared by the condensation of 2,4-dinitrophenylacetyl hydrazine with appropriate 2,3-dioxo-S-substituted indoles. Some of the title compounds have shown interesting anti-inflammatory activity against carrageenin-induced inflammation. An attempt has also been made to arrive at some structure activity relationship. In addition, the compounds were found to be Central Nervous System depressants and quite non-toxic.read more

Surface acidity of carbon black 'Spheron 9' has been studied using bases of different strengths. Three type of acidic groups have been proposed to exist on the surface of 'Spheron 9'. The one which showed maximum decomposition in the lOO-3000C temperature range and which was neutralized with sodium bicarbonate only was thought to be either physically adsorbed CO2 or some .stro~ acidic CO2 evolving group such as carboxyl group. The other group which was totally eliminated at about 7000C and which was neutralized with aqueous sodium hydroxide and the stronger bases, but not with sodium bicarbonate was suggested to be a weakly acidic CO evolving f-Iactonic group. The third group which remained in appreciable quantity even by degassing ?he carbon at 7000C and which was neutralized with the stronger bases and with alcoholic potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide but not with aqueous sodium hydroxide and sodium bicarbonate was thought to be a weakly acidic CO evolving keto-enol group. The keto-enol group has been found to be the major group on the surface of 'Spheron 9' read more

Oxine is usually used for accurate determination of most metals specially in acidic solutions. The present work was directed towards the complexing of both oxine and phosphate to get a more powerful chelating agent. The complexing of metals from the fust tIansition series with this oxine derivative was studied with the effect of pH on its stability. The confmnation of the structures were done using JR, UV, NMR and the Mass spectra. The limits of pH at which the transformation between the keto- to enol form occurs has been given.read more

The stability constants of the complexes formed between trivalent ions and related carboxyphenyllhydraz0-j3,(Jiketones ligands are reported at 300C and at constant ionic strength (O.IM KNO ) in 75% dioxane-water.The dtmity of different ligands for complexation with lanthanide ions reaches its highest value with ortho-carboxyphenylhydrazo-benzoylacetone; the lowest aff'mity is attained in the case of m-carboxyphenylhydr8zodiethyl malonate ligands. The relation between the overall stability constants "{j2"of chelate compounds and both the atomic number of the lanthanide and 1: pKa's of the ligands were investigated.read more

The phosphine derivatives, R2R P or R3P (where R = aryl or substituted aryl group and R = alkyl or alkoxy group) form 1:1 and 1:2 adducts with iodine. The stoichiometries of these adducts depend upon the molar ratios of the reactants. In carbon tetrachloride solutions, these adducts are present as "ion pairs". The tetraiodides are comparatively unstable and change into the more stable diiodides with time. The nature of the adducts and changes in the electronic spectra are discussed.read more

Two indirect atomic absorption spectrophotometric methods for the determination of 0.2 - 3.0/otmole ascorbic acid are described. In one, silver ions are reduced by ascorbic acid to metallic silver and in the other copper (10 ions are reduced to copper (1) ions which are then precipitated as copper (0 thiocyanate. The latter method is applied for the detennination of ascorbic acid in some tablets. read more
